Divergences of Property Law

Description :This work is inspired by the comparative study published in The Interaction of Contract Law and Tort and Property Law in Europe (ISBN 3 935808 20 8-Cloth-$79.00-2004). Out of a transnational (comparative and EU-oriented) perspective, the essays included discuss whether divergences of property law on contractual security rights in movables constitute an obstacle to the internal market and, if so, what solutions could be offered. Unification or harmonization of private international law cannot offer an adequate solution, while unification of domestic security laws could. However, the latter will take a very long time, partly due to the specific nature of property law. The contributing authors advocate the development of a European Security Right in Movables (ESRM) in addition to the respective contemporary national security rights. A real ESRM would clearly support free competition within the European Union. However, the development of an ESRM will take much time, in particular when dealing with the relation between that ESRM and domestic security rights in the member states. The reader will also find considerations on the contents of an ESRM and on the outlines of the required additional provisions.

Description :Based on access to secret documents and interviews with many of the participants, Subversion as Foreign Policy is an extraordinary account of civil war in Indonesia provoked by President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and resulting in the killing of thousands of Indonesians and the destruction of much of the country's air force and navy. "This startling new book reveals a covert intervention by the United States in Indonesia in the late 1950s involving, among other things, the supply of thousands of weapons, the creation and deployment of a secret CIA air force and logistical support from the Seventh Fleet. The intervention occurred on such a massive scale that it is difficult to believe it has been kept almost totally secret from the American public for nearly 40 years. And this CIA operation proved to be even more disastrous than the Bay of Pigs". -- San Francisco Chronicle "An exemplary study of an ignominious chapter of the Cold War in Southeast Asia". -- Journal of Asian Studies "Subversion as Foreign Policy is a remarkable book.... The Kahins have provided a rare insight into the workings of U.S. policy towards Indonesia, both clandestine and official". -- London Times Literary Supplement

Description :HEALING OUR WORLD: THE OTHER PIECE OF THE PUZZLE integrates our Judeo-Christian heritage with the personal self-responsibility of the Aquarian Age & the political self-responsibility of the worldwide libertarian movement. Step, by step, in easy-to-understand prose, Dr. Ruwart demonstrates that the health care crisis, environmental destruction, & the plight of the poor are caused, not by selfish others, but by our attempts to control them through ineffective government intervention. In trying to control others, we find ourselves controlled by special interest groups who are empowered by our naivete. Readers of HEALING OUR WORLD can no longer be fooled, however, since they come away with an enlightened view of how the political world really works. The practice of non-aggression (honoring our neighbor's choice & righting our wrongs) creates a win-win world. The author, a biomedical researcher who has been called the "conscience of the Libertarian Party," uses quotes from well-known philosophers & sages, humorous cartoons, & plain common sense to show that universal harmony & abundance are well within our grasp. Historical examples illustrate the effectiveness of non-aggression in the most stringent testing ground of all-the real world. To order: SunStar Press, P.O. Box 342, Kalamazoo, MI 49005-0342. Description :In 1992, Lois Duncan, acclaimed author of fictional suspense novels, wrote a horror story she could never have imagined writing—a true account of the murder of her own daughter, Kaitlyn Arquette. Kait, 18, was shot to death as she drove home from a friend’s house on a Sunday evening in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Police closed the unsolved case as a “random shooting,” refusing to accept information that indicated otherwise, although it had all the earmarks of a professional hit. That first book, WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, was Duncan’s desperate attempt to motivate informants and prevent the facts of Kait’s story from becoming buried. It turned out to accomplish much more than that. Duncan’s new book, ONE TO THE WOLVES: ON THE TRAIL OF A KILLER, is even more horrifying than its predecessor as new information poured in, the family ran for their lives, and their original suspicions turned out to be the tip of an iceberg so immense that Kait, herself, could not have known how dangerous the information was that she had been sitting on in order to protect a now-estranged boyfriend. Since Kait didn’t live to reveal it, her mother now does so in a book so intense and yet so painfully human that the reader will never forget it. All of the elements of a suspenseful mystery are here--intrigue, turns and twists, cover-ups, and page-turning action. The sobering fact is that, this time, the story isn’t fiction.

Description :In Forensic DNA Profiling Protocols, leading forensic experts from around the world describe in detail their time-proven methods for identity testing through DNA analysis. Their state-of-the-art collection of easily reproducible methods includes all of the major techniques of DNA analysis currently used in forensic identity testing. The book covers PCR-based test systems, the now widely used STR typing systems (complete with details of both manual and automated detection systems), repeat unit mapping (MVR), direct-phase minisequencing, capillary electrophoresis, and direct blotting. Also fully discussed are the recovery of DNA from a wide range of sample types (blood, semen, skeletal remains, and saliva), species testing, sex determination, and mitochondrial DNA testing. Forensic DNA Profiling Protocols captures and makes practical for all laboratories the whole array of new technologies and techniques that have revolutionized forensic science. The readily reproducible methods elucidated here represent the state-of-the-art for those scientists who want to introduce, establish, and perfect DNA identification techniques in their laboratories.

Description :Clinical psychologist and author of The Defining Decade, Meg Jay takes us into the world of the supernormal: those who soar to unexpected heights after childhood adversity. Whether it is the loss of a parent to death or divorce; bullying; alcoholism or drug abuse in the home; mental illness in a parent or a sibling; neglect; emotional, physical or sexual abuse; having a parent in jail; or growing up alongside domestic violence, nearly 75% of us experience adversity by the age of 20. But these experiences are often kept secret, as are our courageous battles to overcome them. Drawing on nearly two decades of work with clients and students, Jay tells the tale of ordinary people made extraordinary by these all-too-common experiences, everyday superheroes who have made a life out of dodging bullets and leaping over obstacles, even as they hide in plain sight as doctors, artists, entrepreneurs, lawyers, parents, activists, teachers, students and readers. She gives a voice to the supernormals among us as they reveal not only "How do they do it?" but also "How does it feel?" These powerful stories, and those of public figures from Andre Agassi to Jay Z, will show supernormals they are not alone but are, in fact, in good company. Marvelously researched and compassionately written, this exceptional book narrates the continuing saga that is resilience as it challenges us to consider whether -- and how -- the good wins out in the end.
